Alberta's oil sands deposits, which are said to only be 2nd to Saudi Arabia's reserves, have been described by media as potentially supplying the world's need/demand for petroleum in the future. Development has been encouraged, as Alberta Energy attempts to balance between oil sands investors, government and industry and helping oil sands developers move forward.
Deposits of bitumen, oil sands have molasses type consistency (or viscous), and will only flow when heated or diluted with lighter hydrocarbons.
As annual oil sands production increases, it is possible that oil sands could make up as much as half of Canada's total crude production. In addition, oil sands industry could create tens of thousands of jobs in the next 5 years.
